Olio: a miscellaneous collection of things —

My recent internet findings …

  1. I had not heard the terms “trigger warnings” or “microagressions” until the past month. Now I’m seeing the whole phenomenon surrounding me. For a good article that explains both, see “The Coddling of the American Mind” from The Atlantic. South Park has also been exploring the issue in recent episodes with the character P.C. Principal.
  2. “i will let go of my darkness when the time is right.” from Rebelle Society – An answer to American society’s constant focus on positivity.

  3. Embroidered Psychological Landscapes by Michelle Kingdom from Colossal – These are sweet and mysterious. I’d love to see them in person so I can get a sense of scale. They are described as small in the article.

  4.  Sweden’s Minister of the Future Explains How to Make Politicians Think Long-Term from Motherboard – Sweden has a Minister of the Future! How cool is that? If any country can make this work, it will be sensible, ahead-of-the-curve Sweden.

  5.  The Science of Why Scarcity Makes Us More Creative from Fast Company – This falls into the category of “No Duh!” science for me. Probs because I have read no shortage of books on creativity. Interestingly enough, if you look at the rise of thrift stores and how people are turning the “useless” junk of others into new things, perhaps there is also creativity that surrounds this first world abundance, too. What do we do with all this crap?

  6. The Sound of Silence (originally by Simon & Garfunkel) as redone by Disturbed – As Hubby and I have often noted, heavy metal bands are some of the best performers of ballads. Hubby shared this video with me.
