Internet Nostalgia – Bitey of Brackenwood

Thought Fodder

I was suddenly hit with a fit of Internet Nostalgia the other day. I recalled seeing an animated video online years ago that featured a little yellow blob creature in a beautiful forest. For the life of me, I could not remember the name or anything else about the video but I desperately wanted to see it again. Arrgh!

It dawned on me that I had shared a link to this video on my original Filter & Splice blog, so I went back to the blog to find it. (Sadly, all the pictures are now gone from the blog, but happily the text is still there.)

I searched through every month of posts, scanning for a link to the video. I couldn’t find it the first time through, so I sent a text to Ian (a.k.a. “Eldest Son”) to see if he could remember the video. It seemed to me that he was the one who introduced it to me. While waiting for his reply, I went back to Filter & Splice a conducted a more thorough read of the posts and, AHA!, I found it.

The video was called “Bitey of Brackenwood” and it was Sebastian (“Young Son Number 2”) who first told me about it. I found an uploaded version on YouTube (not of good quality) and discovered that I was right about the little yellow blob in the forest, but had forgotten the majority of the video, particularly the mean Dashkin who beats up the yellow blob creature.

Ian got back to me the following day, saying the video was “Bitey of Brackenwood” and that it was “one of those videos that sticks with you.” No wonder I was feeling nostalgic.

The creator of “Bitey of Brackenwood” is Adam Phillips and he has made an entire series of Brackenwood films, along with a BiteyCastle series. They are best viewed from his website, bitey.com, where the quality is excellent. Phillips was working on creating a Brackenwood game called “Dashkin,” but the project was halted and he plans to release the source files for the portion that he worked on. (Phillips posted about the game on his website, plus there is a Facebook page devoted to it.)

I have to say, I’m happy the Internet Nostalgia struck and I was able to find “Bitey of Brackenwood” again. Happy, too, that my son remembered.

Have you ever been struck by Internet Nostalgia? What video or website gave you the feeling that you MUST experience it again, even if it was  years ago when you first saw it?
